The Winona Campus Volunteer Committee (WCVC) of Saint Mary’s University was formed in 2001 and is dedicated to bringing faculty and staff together in service to the community. Laurie Haase, a member of the committee, represents all committee members for the purpose of this award.
The WCVC strives to model ethical service and leadership. The committee has regularly engaged with the Winona community in projects including: United Way’s Day of Caring, Habitat for Humanity, Spruce Up Winona, Adopt-A-River, and Gifts for Winona. Efforts have extended beyond Winona to relief for victims of Hurricane Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti, and to scholarships for students in Africa. Fundraising efforts over the past five years have totaled $43,000, all of which was donated to various causes.
The Gifts for Winona program deserves special mention. The program is managed by Saint Mary’s and the WCVC, in partnership with Winona Volunteer Services and the Winona Post, to meet a significant need in the Winona community. The program consolidated all Christmas gift-giving programs in Winona into one program. For nine years, the WCVC has managed the program database; provided facilities and volunteers to manage gift collection, wrapping, and pick-up; and raised funds. The program has provided Christmas gifts annually to 1,200-1,846 individuals, mostly children; over the nine years of existence, the program has provided gifts to over 13,244 individuals.
