Martha Schultz: Carleton College’s Presidents’ Community Partner Award Recipient

Martha Schultz and students

Martha Schultz, Youth Development Coordinator for Faribault School District, has been instrumental in developing two new programs with Carleton students.  Through Martha’s support and guidance, Shantrice King ’13 started a program entitled Courage to Write. Courage to Write students meet weekly to explore body image issues for women of color through writing.  Carleton student Anna Fure-Slocum ’12 began working with Martha in 2010 to develop and lead a college access program that connects Carleton students with youth in Faribault with a concentration on tutoring, higher education access, and experiential learning, including science activities. The weekly program serves about 20-30 students, primarily Somali, on Tuesdays and Thursdays afternoons.  Martha is an outstanding youth worker inspiring both the high school students in Faribault and the Carleton College students.
