St. Benedict’s Senior Community: Saint Cloud State University’s Presidents’ Community Partner Award Recipient

St. Benedict’s Senior Community

St. Benedict’s Senior Community is an outstanding candidate in this category because the organization provides hand-on opportunities for students, but is also involved in furthering an overall culture for meaningful campus and community collaborations.  A large number of campus volunteers and students from many different classes, such as social work, sociology, gerontology, German to name a few, have long standing relationships with this community partner.  This speaks to the need in the community, but also to the support students receive while working there.  The volunteer coordinator at St. Ben’s, Jo Ellen Johnson has done much to develop sustained and reciprocal partnerships between campus and St. Ben’s. Besides volunteer placement and guidance, she is very involved in fostering an ongoing dialogue between campus and community.  As a long-time member of the Service Learning Advisory Committee, she has worked on creating infrastructures which allow sustainable and mutually beneficial collaborations between campus and community.
